Ch 16 Weekly Readings

Chapter 16: Social and Personality Development in Adolescence

The reading this week was very enlighteningI learned that popular adolescents are at the top of the social hierarchy. I also learned that there are degrees of popularity in adolescence which include popular, controversial, neglected, and rejected adolescents. I began to reflect on my past and I had alot of friends who were cheerleaders, football and basketball players and I know that's why they were popular. They were my friends because I grew up with them. Come to think, I was very popular too. But, it was not by choice but maybe by association. Meaning I didn't do anything out of the ordinary to try and get people to be my friends. I know I was not very friendly or that outgoing. But, for some reason that's why alot of people liked me. People thought I was cool cause I spoke my mind. That's what I think adolescents should do anyway. Just be yourself! If people like you they do and if they don't then that's just fine too. I'm still the same way I was when I was a teen and will be that way forever. If people can't accept you for who you are then they are not worth having as a friend.

Ch. 15 Weekly readings

Ch. 15 Cognitive Development in Adolescence

The journey from childhood to adolescence can be very challenging. Adolescence marks the beginning development of more complex thinking processes. Adolescents have the ability to began moving from childhood toward adulthood due to their cognitive development. Cognitive development refers to the development of the ability to think and reason. This phase of development allows the adolescent to search for their sense of self. They strive to learn to make good choices and decisions toward their future as a responsible citizen. As adolescents enhance their understanding of themselves, they actually become more aware of their own emotions and feelings and how these feelings affect their daily lives. While this process is very important it is also very difficult. The identity issues that begin during adolescence determine the paths an adolescent may take in future aspects of their lives. I can only imagine what adolescents who are growing up in this day and age are going through. The problems that teens face today are more challenging than ever before.
