Ch 16 Weekly Readings

Chapter 16: Social and Personality Development in Adolescence

The reading this week was very enlighteningI learned that popular adolescents are at the top of the social hierarchy. I also learned that there are degrees of popularity in adolescence which include popular, controversial, neglected, and rejected adolescents. I began to reflect on my past and I had alot of friends who were cheerleaders, football and basketball players and I know that's why they were popular. They were my friends because I grew up with them. Come to think, I was very popular too. But, it was not by choice but maybe by association. Meaning I didn't do anything out of the ordinary to try and get people to be my friends. I know I was not very friendly or that outgoing. But, for some reason that's why alot of people liked me. People thought I was cool cause I spoke my mind. That's what I think adolescents should do anyway. Just be yourself! If people like you they do and if they don't then that's just fine too. I'm still the same way I was when I was a teen and will be that way forever. If people can't accept you for who you are then they are not worth having as a friend.

You mentioned the four kind of adolescents in regards to popularity- popular, controversial, neglected and rejected adolescents. I have a problem with the way the textbook catagorizes popularity because I think popularity is more complicated than that. You said that the cheerleaders, football and basketball players were the popular kids. Would you say that among the art kids they have their own "popular" people as well? If a group of kids are not interested or don't even know anything about the football kids, would the football kids still be considered popular? Is it majority rule?
