Ch. 14 Physical Development in Adolescence
In this chapter I learned alot about the causes and effects of obesity, anorexia, and bulimia. Adolescence is a time of growth and development. I found out that there are no single causes to these disorders. Being obese affects all aspects of a child's life. These children develop severe emotional and physical problems. Anorexia is an eating disorder where people starve themselves and it usually begins in young people around the onset of puberty. Anorexia mainly affects adolescent girls. All victims of bulimia are plagued by irresistible urges to binge on food in a short time. After consuming large amounts of food they vomit or use other methods to get rid of the excess food. After reading this chapter I came to realize how infected peoples minds have become about the way they look. Teens have to be teased about being too fat or too thin. In this phase of life people are so vunerable and worried about what other (peers) think. I think everyone should be happy with what God blessed you with as long as you are healthy. To the adolescents out there who are going through these disorders right now should reach out to someone and seek help.

Ch. 10 & 13 weekly readings
Ch. 10 Social and Personality Development in the Preschool Years
In this chapter it discussed how growing up in an individualistic culture is different from a collectivist culture. Individualistic cultures are defined by detachment from relationships and community. The individual views him/herself as relatively independent from others. On the other hand, collectivist cultures stress the importance of relationships, roles and status within the social system. Both are broad dimensions used to differentiate cultures. I learned that in an indiviualistic culture independence, value and personal fullfillment is prioritized. Collectivist cultures stress harmony and obedience. I think the United States is an individualistic culture and foreign countries are collectivist.
Ch. 13 Social and Personality Development in Middle Childhood
In middle childhood being popular and having many friends are two significant factors. Children who have a strong group of friendships and who are popular with their peers are socially competent. Social skills, social awareness, and self- confidence are all milestones that the child will face during middle childhood. I think all children want to adapt and be accepted socially. I think that children have it bad during this stage because they go from wanting the approval of their parents to wanting the approval from their peers.

Ch. 9 weekly readings
Ch. 9 Cognitive development in the preschool years.
In ch. 9 I learned many things, but the most significant was about head start. Head start serves child development through the preschool years and their low- income families. It was the most significant because I remember going to head start. It is a national program that promotes school readiness. It serves as evidence to show that the early years matter a great deal to a child's growth and development. This program is funded by the government. I think this program is a great deal to those in need. It provides an opportunity to those who are less fortunate to be ready and able to adapt to school. This program provides parents with educational, nutritional and health support to better aide the children in transition into school.

Ch. 8 + 11 weekly readings
Chapter 8: Physical Development in the preschool years + Chapter 11: Physical Development in Middle Childhood
In chapter 8 I learned, that significant development is still occuring after infancy into the preschool years. These years are characterized by changes in physical body, gross and fine motor skills and their senses. I learned that at this stage children are becoming independent but still need help from adults. So many things are happening to them and they need our love and guidance to be healthy beings.
In chapter 11 I learned, that nutrition is the key factor to development during these years. I never knew how much nutrition affects many aspects of a child's life. Children should be encouraged to be physically active to ensure good health. I believe that if all children learn these things while they are young it will become the norm for them and they can live longer, healthier lives.

Ch. 4+ 5 weekly readings
Chapter 4: Birth and the Newborn Infant + Chapter 5: Physical Development in Infancy
In chapter 4 I learned, there are signs that tell you that a labor is beginning. Contractions get stronger and closer together and the bag of waters or membranes rupture. The result is an open cervix that thins so the baby's head can pass through. Another form of childbirth is a Cesarean. It is when a surgical incision is made through the mothers abdomen and uterus. Labor ends with the birth of a baby. I found everything to be very informative and interesting. I have yet to experience having a baby, but after reading this chapter I really don't look forward to it.
In chapter 5 I learned, that there are many changes that occur in an infants body. The physcal development is extensive in the first two years of life. The brain continues to develop past infancy. There motor devleopment is a active process between nature and nurture. Finally there sensory and perceptual development go hand in hand. I learned that a baby is veru fragile in infancy.
